Who runs the Uptown Family Calendar?
Oh yeah, that's me! I'm Kirsten, and I am a local Inwood mom to a 4 year old and an taby (toddler baby). I have often asked myself, What cool events am I missing out on with my kiddos? No parent wants FOMO, and no parent wants a weekend at home with all the kids and nothing to occupy their time! So go ahead and sip your lukewarm cup of coffee and let me do the searching for you!
As I return to work after maternity leave, I now have the wonderful support of Katie, another local mom, who is helping maintain the calendar as well. Thank you, Katie!!!
Also I should mention: This is a labor of love to provide a central location for events to keep your family engaged and wear out the kids before bedtime. Please be kind when (not if!) you spot errors. I, too, am human!
What's the best way to enjoy the Uptown Family Calendar?
Use it as a starting point! Please confirm with each individual event organizer prior to loading up the stroller and getting your kids pumped up. You'll save yourself a lot of schlepping and a lot of meltdowns. I will update this calendar as much as possible, but I likely won’t catch every cancellation or change. Use your best judgment about whether your child’s age and stage of development is the right fit for each event. I also won’t be able to answer questions about specific events… just here to pass along what I know and guide you to the sources.
Be smart and safe! This website will never ask you for payment (unless you want to donate using the links at the bottom of each page), but some of the linked sites will. I will do my research but be sure you do yours in order to ensure your money is going to a trusted vendor/organization.
Search for events by subscribing to the calendar! As of now there is not a way to search the calendar on this site, but if you follow the steps in this video, you'll be able to add the calendar to your own Google account and search events there.
What events are included in the Uptown Family Calendar?
Uptown Family Calendar is focused on events serving families with 0-5 year old children. The calendar includes:
in-person and online events
free and paid events
events taking place in Inwood and Washington Heights (including Hudson Heights and Fort George), with some cameos from Harlem (including Hamilton Heights, Sugar Hill, Morningside Heights, and East Harlem) and easily accessible parts of the Bronx (including Marble Hill, Riverdale, and Kingsbridge)
parent/baby or parent/child activities
recurring free or pay-what-you-wish days at museums and cultural institutions
kid-friendly sporting events, shows, or exhibits at cultural institutions
The Class Directory is a listing of local businesses and professionals who offer semester-long classes and lessons for children 0-5.
Is there anything that is NOT included in the Uptown Family Calendar?
Yes! Obviously, anything that is deemed harmful to the community will not be added to this calendar. But surprisingly, a lot of awesome opportunities are not within the scope of this calendar, including:
events and activities for children 6+ (so sorry but it's not in my wheelhouse... yet!)
events outside of Inwood, Washington Heights, Harlem, and nearby Bronx
school tours (unless they come with an awesome party or festival)
religious events that are not explicitly open to the entire community
events submitted on this website that do not include all necessary information
events requiring a membership (e.g. members-only zoo events, NYC parks events for park members)
volunteer opportunities that have not been confirmed as kid friendly (some are not due to liability)
paid season-long or semester-long commitments (e.g. soccer class, music class, camps, etc.) -- these can be found in the class directory-- however, any open house weeks or trial class dates will be included on the calendar
How can I help support the Uptown Family Calendar?
Submit an event: You can submit your own event HERE or email me with any leads at UptownFamilyCalendar@gmail.com. Please allow a few days for me to review submissions and post to the calendar. I want to make sure everything is legit. I also want to remain present with my own family, so I’ll be updating the calendar when my kids aren’t awake or with me.
Be my editor: I know I keep mentioning mistakes, but community events are notoriously fickle, and so is the weather! I appreciate corrections in the form of a kind email to UptownFamilyCalendar@gmail.com
Contribute financially: The overhead for this project is low but the labor is high. Anything you'd like to offer is greatly appreciated (and let's be honest... it will probably be used to pay to take my kid to one of the events on the calendar!). Links are at the bottom of each page on this site.
If your family has benefited from the Uptown Family Calendar and you'd like to contribute financially to its continued maintenance, please use the links below. We appreciate all support!
